OpenAI research lead says 80% to 90% of work is now aimed at GPT-7 and beyond

OpenAI has shifted most of its research effort toward future model generations, according to Boris Power, the company’s head of applied research. Power said 80% to 90% of OpenAI’s research work is now focused on GPT-7, GPT-8, and later models. He also drew a distinction between long-range model development and improvements made within a single generation, describing the latter as a deliberate short-term bet. In his view, raw model performance is not the biggest issue at this stage. Instead, he said, a larger problem is that many users still do not know what they can do with AI.
